STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

At Dominion Road School we endeavour to provide the students with a wide range of sporting, cultural, innovation/STEM and arts opportunities.

The students at Dominion Road School are able to engage in many enrichment opportunities such as International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) exams, a range of cultural groups, music groups and the EPro 8 Challenge.

We also have a Waihanga Wāhi (MakerSpace) where students can create, invent and learn.  Opportunities in our Waihangi Wāhi include using STEM-based tools such as robotics, coding, drones, and Makey Makeys.  Along with being a space for performing arts, such as choir and playing ukulele.   We also value the importance of teaching and providing opportunities for our students to develop essential skills such as, problem-solving, collaboration, communication, curiosity, empathy and perseverance.

We are a culturally diverse school school which allows us to enjoy celebrating a variety of cultures.  Students are able to celebrate their cultures throughout the year during Language Weeks where they share their cultures with the school and celebrate on Friday with a shared cultural lunch, which families are also invited to.  We are incredibly proud of our annual Cultural Day which is held at the end of each year.  Students take the lead in organising performances and celebrating their cultures at this event.

We have a very active and proud Pasifika, Bollywood and Kapa haka group, the latter of which is led by Matua Ngārino.

Students have a range of opportunities to develop their leadership skills at Dominion Road School.  Some of these groups are:

  • House Captains - two students from each of our four houses (Kauri, Kōwhai, Pōhutukawa and Tōtara) represent the student body of the school

  • Collaborative Kids Council - this is a group of eight students who often work alongside the House Captains in leading school events.  This group also takes part in projects run in collaboration with the Puketāpapa Local Board

  • Enviro Group - This group of students lead the growth of sustainability at our school

Sport is an important part of life at Dominion Road School and children are exposed to a wide range of sports. We are also fortunate to have experts from the sporting community come in to  work with students. This supplements the classroom's physical education programme.

Students are involved in fitness everyday and are encouraged to keep active. Children have the opportunity to compete in a range of sports at various zone sports competitions, against other local primary schools.  We also take part in the local Saturday netball competition.
