INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
We are delighted to welcome International and English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) students to Dominion Road School. We offer specialised English language classes to students when necessary. Colleen Merrylees is our trained specialist tutor and works in a specially equipped ESOL room. Our ESOL programmes are a feature of our school and valued by our staff and community.
Students enjoy opportunities for specialised teaching in small groups and quickly form close relationships with both Colleen and fellow students. She has created an exciting and relevant teaching space with charts and posters and student work on display. The room is well resourced with a range of resources designed to cater to children who are learning English.
Students are carefully assessed upon arrival at the school in order to ascertain their levels of English. They are placed in age appropriate classrooms and additional support is given to, when and as required. Paraprofessionals are timetabled to work in different classrooms providing in-classroom support with literacy and maths to targeted students. They are also able to provide more intensive support for newly arrived students.
Dominion Road School has agreed to observe the requirements of the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Ministry of Education. Copies of the Code are available from the Ministry of Education website at www.minedu.govt.nz
